Welcome to The NZ SLST Association Website
Important Note: URGENT
On Monday 23rd April a discussion document entitled: Amalgamating the Supplementary Learning Support (SLS) and Resource Teacher: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) services was released by the Ministry of Education.
This document outlines two proposed models for feedback. As of 2013 SLS as a service will no longer apply. Under the amalgamation all current SLS teachers will become RTLBs. The Association representatives met with NZEI today (26th April) to discuss the document.
We are currently working together to develop guidance around how to best make a response. In the meantime please read the documentation - particularly the two options as we will need every one of you to feedback. Please talk about this document with your Principals, SENCO's, teachers and parents. Ask them to write to their ministers.
We believe in the service that we provide and will work towards the best educational outcomes for all of our students.
For further information and timeframes for feedback please look under M.O.E. - SLS Guidelines/Review on this website.
Supplementary Learning Support (SLS) is a Ministry of Education initiative that began in 2004.
Learning Support Teachers (LSTs), or Supplementary Learning Support teachers (SLS) as they are also known in the field, provide support to students with significant and on going special education needs, with the overall goal of improving educational outcomes for students.
The initiative began with 55 learning support teachers nationally catering for around 550 students. Now we have approximately 150 teachers nationally, catering for the needs of 1500 students.
The New Zealand Supplementary Learning Support Teachers’ Association Inc. is the Association formed by the SLS teachers as a means to improve information sharing and to unite teachers with a common role.
We welcome you to our site and hope that you find information that is helpful and of interest.
We welcome all new SLS teachers. Please make sure we know who you are, so that we can add you to our database, and include you in our email tree for sending out additional information.
